Just a 'little' History of POWI-Liberia

Correspondence was sent to the headquarters office of Peace of the World International on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 9:40:25 a.m. (GMT-0500) with the Subject:  Partnership.

The letter expressed a desire to partner with POWI to assist "Vulnerable and Marginalized Street People" in Liberia and this is how the letter read regarding the people with whom they were working and the need that still exists:

Most part they are Homeless roughly between the ages of 6 to 50, a very high percentage under 18, and lived - if that is correct word- in ruins of abandoned buildings, in open market areas and on beaches.

Many are desperate and can only find money illegally either via prostitution or petty thief.

Young girls in this group are susceptible to rape and sexual submission.

Many are traumatized from their War experiences but they do not have nowhere to go, no skills to offer, and no dream of improving their lives.

Even the Government of Liberia has started demolishing abandoned buildings and rehabilitating the City cemeteries where many lived.

In 2006, Africare Liberia along with a senior staff from the Human Resources Development Institute (HRDI) based in Chicago USA, took cognizance of our clients in several Unforgettable slums, in the initial design phase of the project called WISE which FIO-Liberia was to implement, after waiting for a long period of time, we were told that the project has not found donor support.

We therefore, ask your organization to partnership with our Organization in Liberia, West Africa.

May God continue to bless us as we strive for better society.
